How to mitigate the threat of being a victim of ransom ware

Ransom ware seems to have gotten the better of many ordinary users. However, it is not a threat that has no mitigation measures available to the ordinary user, but is more of following good basic security and hygiene practices, to not fall prey to a ransom ware threat. Do the following:

avast can not initialize avast! engine: Invalid argument

When running avast, the following error message is displayed at times:

avast can not initialize avast! engine: Invalid argument

To overcome this error, open a terminal window and enter the following command: $ sudo sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=100000000 <enter>

Install Clamtk (Clam Anti-virus)

# yum install clamtk <enter>

For clamtk installation, if you get error cannot parse freshclam.conf. Do following: # vi /etc/freshclam.conf  <enter>

Locate #Example and remove it from the freshclam.conf file . Look for database.XY and replace with database.IN for India. Now start clamtk and you should be able to update antivirus signatures.

Clam Antivirus

A search for a new antivirus solution brought me to the clam antivirus (http://www.clamav.net). This is an open source antivirus toolkit for Linux systems.

Clamav antivirus on Linux

# yum install clamtk

This installs all of clamav antivirus on your system. It also installs the GUI virus scanner clamtk. Once this is installed, edit /etc/freshclam.conf Search for an unremarked line starting with Example. Remark it by putting a # before Example.
