Flashing dd-wrt on TP-Link WDR4300 router

The TP-Link WDR4300 wireless router comes with dual band and the default TP-Link firmware. This firmware is good for normal users but, if you install DD-WRT on the router, you can make it do a lot more.

  1. Download latest dd-wrt firmware for the WDR4300 from http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database
  2. Remove internet cable from the router
  3. Do a 30/30/30 reset
  4. First flash factory_to_dd-wrt.bin
  5. Then after the router restarts, do 30/30/30 reset and connect to http://192.168.1.1
  6. Flash the webflash.bin file. Do 30/30/30 reset and;
  7. Now set up the router as per your preferences.

My primary objective for flashing the TP-Link WDR4300 was to get 2 routers on dd-wrt and then use one of them as a Wireless LAN repeater to extend the range of the primary network. Unfortunately, it is not easy to have 2 different vendor firmwares and make them work that way. Therefore, the decision to use dd-wrt on both routers.

You will notice that the wireless range drops below that of the original firmware after you install dd-wrt on the WDR4300. If you intend to use another router to get across walls, then you are okay.

If you need the newer firmware, visit http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=others%2Feko%2FBrainSlayer-V24-preSP2%2F
